Commitment, Communication and Candles

Happy February everyone! Okay…happy mid-February. I cannot believe how fast this month is moving.

Not too long ago I posted a blog thanking many of you and letting you know about the excitement building around my contract work…and then I promised to write more. Now, I could sit here and write down the million and one excuses I have for not blogging like I should, but frankly they don’t matter. What does matter, however, is that I stick to this commitment. So, here I am. Back to the grind. Promising to keep up this continued communication and fun!

New beginnings

For those of you that do not know, today is my last day with NRHA. And, while not exactly what I expected, my time here has been filled with so many experiences, people and lessons that I can only hope other young professionals have in their careers. It’s funny how “lasts” can make you sit back and really reflect on what you’ve accomplished and learned, who you’ve met and built relationships with, and how you’ve grown. Last week, as I accepted a position as the new Marketing Director for the Warm Glow Candle Co. , I was filled with a flood of emotion: “Finally! This is it. My turn to shine, make a difference. My turn to really make my career move and do it closer to home. Less of a drive! Higher salary! …this is going to be great!” This week, I’m more calm, more reflective and more respectful of the time I’ve spent working to get where I am. I think as young professionals it is all to easy to fall into the “me me me” trap, and for many of us it isn’t even a selfish act. It comes from a place of desire. Desiring more responsibility, more respect and trust, better relationships…desiring to be given the chance to be that top notch professional we know we can be. A lot of times we can’t understand why employers and business contacts don’t want to see that from us or why we just don’t seem to be moving forward at the pace we just knew we would after college. Today, I just want to give a little hope from one young’n to the next- slow down. Don’t be in such a hurry to move forward that you miss the opportunities in front of you. This past year has filled me with irreplaceable workplace knowledge, relationships and industry-specific training that I’ve, unfortunately, taken for granted.

Don’t make my mistake, friends. Take where you are and run with it, but don’t get so far ahead of yourself that you forget to appreciate where you are.

So with that said, to my NRHA friends and the MANY relationships that have seen me through this past year- Thank You. And I hope this next adventure proves as excited as the last. Don’t be strangers, come see me over at Warm Glow in Centerville, maybe I’ll buy you a candle. 😉

P.S. I will still be working on contract projects with Anderson Creative Communications as they come in. Nothing can really slow down this girl…not even candles. 🙂

Time flies, thank you.

Well, I’ve already broken my post every day vow. Surprise Surprise. I suppose that was a little over zealous anyways.

I know it’s been a over a week- and I owe you 2 recipes and a stick figure drawing, but I promise it was worth it. For those of you that don’t know, I have taken the past few weeks to officially launch the contract business I have been working under for the past year. Contract work has really been building for me in the past couple of months and I finally decided to take the plunge. I greatly appreciate the support and advocacy that I’ve gotten from so many of you and I hope to do your faith justice.

The time has come the Walrus said…

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about corporate culture. The who, what, when, where, why and how’s of what we do day in and day out. I recently came to the conclusion that this can be likened to a very familiar Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland, where I play Alice.

Here is a few things I learned from the characters that have come in and out of my Wonderland:

  1. There will always a be a White Rabbit that is too busy for you. Don’t take it personal, they are just climbing the ladder to SUC…cess
  2. Try not to offend the Mouse. Actually screw it, this person will always have some bigger, better problem than yours anyway.
  3. The Caterpillar will be rude, hateful and demeaning. I find it best to make jokes for my own amusement regarding this person. Who knows, maybe you’ll even make them laugh once in a while.
  4. Find a Chesire Cat. They may be mischievous but they will challenge you, help you find humor in a shitty situation and aren’t afraid to make things right.
  5.  The Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Dormouse. You know the “clique”.  Don’t waste your time trying to be a part of the group, they will confuse you and you are better off alone. Seriously, look at what the Hatter and the Hare do to the Dormouse.
  6. Bill the Lizard is the workhorse. Plain and simple, you probably owe a thank you or two to this person.
  7. The Queen of Hearts has a take no prisoners attitude and probably isn’t afraid to show it. Don’t let him or her walk all over you.
  8. The Duchess isn’t always what he/she seems. The epitome of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” this person is misunderstood, worn out and is probably just looking for a little respect and compassion.
  9. The King of Hearts means well but has no direction. While this unorganized and confusing person can be very hard to deal with, they are an integral part of the team. Maybe all they need is a little push…or a swift kick in the you know what.
  10. And finally, Alice. You. Dropped into wonderland, left to survive. Cultivate the relationships, asses the environment and move forth my friend. But remember, every character plays a part in the success [or chaos] of Wonderland.

Today’s post is about setting yourself apart. Getting noticed. Sparking interest.

As some of you may have noticed by now, I can’t seem to keep my hair one color for long. And, what started as a crazy college experiment soon turned into something that, in a way, defines how people see me. Current color choice: fire engine red.

Now, I don’t show you this so you’ll think I’m edgy or cool or professionally rebellious. I show you this because it’s me. In high school, hair color was cool and my mom hated it. In college it was something I could do for me in the midst of my hectic schedule. And now? It’s a trademark. Something as simple as the color of my hair can spark conversation, become an interview ice breaker, or even encourage others to try something new.

Sure, there are several employers and professionals that would scoff at the blue hair I had for Colts season last year or the glow in the dark green streak I had for St. Patricks day a few years ago, but that’s when I ask myself: “Do I really want to put myself in an environment where being me isn’t what they want?”  What a fantastic opportunity to be professionally choosy and seek out the environment I will thrive in, the people I can help, encourage and learn from.

Obviously it would be silly to think everyone can have a physical attribute to set them apart from the crowd, but I would ask you this:

What do you do to set yourself apart?

Maybe you are a cat freak or free time chef. Maybe you make belts out of spoons and headbands out buttons. Maybe you’re bald.

Whatever it is, don’t rule out the things that make you, YOU.

That is what people are interested in. That is what will get you noticed. That is what will spark their interest.

You’re a mean one, mister…Elevator.

I Will Survive!

How to survive your first office holiday party as a young professional.

These are just a few things I’ve learned in my vibrant three years as a young professional.

1. Show up early. This way you have sufficient time to go to the restroom, fix your disheveled self and have at least one cocktail before others arrive.

2. Bring a date that will keep you laughing. This is extremely important for the awkward factor. If you look occupied, people will sit with you. It’s one of those weird laws of nature.

3. Drink whiskey, scotch or vodka. And for God’s sake, try sipping…not chugging. Anything else will make you look like the college frat kid at the party.

4. Act happy about whatever shitty gift you get that isn’t a bonus check. After all, you are the new kid on the block.

5.  Laugh at your boss’s lame jokes and offer to buy him/her a drink (especially if it’s an open bar 😉 )

Posers Pansies and Princesses

Here we go, folks. Love it or hate it- AA is in full swing. The things you will find on this blog will be real, uncensored and potentially detrimental to my career at times. But, to put it bluntly, I’m tired of the posers, pansies and princesses strewn about social media. It’s time to get real. No more fluffy, we love each other because we are supposed to rainbows, unicorns and butterflies bull crap (yes, I will try to keep my sailor mouth to a minimum…no promises though). This is not to say there will not be sincere happy times to come on this blog- but it is to say, if you are looking for archived “positive vibes”, cliche “words of encouragement” or shallow “my job, my industry and my life are always awesome!” posts, this blog is not for you.

Remember- the first step is admitting you have a problem.

I hope, as this adventure develops for me, you can join me in my quest to find the people behind the avatars, the minds behind the tweets, the reasons behind the likes and comments and, really, the life behind this thing we call a digital world. Who knows, maybe you’ll even learn a little something about me (0ops, there’s that narcissism again.)
